Southwest University at El Paso began in June 1999 as a small for-profit school run by Quikstudy Learning Centers, helping El Pasoans learn English and prepare for the GED. Vocational career programs were added in November 2002, followed by medical assistant, diesel technician and MRI technologist training over the next several years. After Texas authorized its first associate degree in 2009, in diagnostic medical sonography, the school adopted the Southwest University at El Paso name, and it began calling itself a university in 2012 when it added bachelor's programs in business and health administration. Today it trains students in nursing, allied health, business and skilled trades from its campus on Montana Avenue.
