History
The Ennis Cotton Compress reflects the city's role as a major cotton-processing center on the Houston & Texas Central Railroad; by 1890 Ennis had a compress along with two banks, cottonseed depositories, a gin, and an opera house, and local operations could handle several hundred bales a day. The compress site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 under the Historic Resources of Ennis nomination, documenting the industrial infrastructure behind Ellis County's cotton economy, which in 1920 ginned more bales than any county in the United States.
