Nelson University grew from three small Pentecostal Bible schools: Southwestern Bible School, opened by P. C. Nelson in Enid, Oklahoma, in 1927; Shield of Faith Bible School in Amarillo, started in 1931; and Southern Bible College, begun at Goose Creek (now Baytown) and later moved to Houston. By 1941 the three had gathered in Fort Worth as Southwestern Bible Institute, and in 1943 the school relocated to Waxahachie, taking over the campus Trinity University had left when it moved to San Antonio. A junior college division was added in the mid-1940s, in 1954 it became a regional school owned by seven Assemblies of God districts, and after its Bible college and junior college divisions were reunited in 1987 it began granting bachelor's degrees. It became Southwestern Assemblies of God University in 1996 and adopted the name Nelson University, honoring its founder, on August 1, 2024. The Farmer Administration Building, erected for Trinity University in the early 1900s, remains the historic centerpiece of the campus.
