History
Christian Gotthelf Wertzner (1800-1852), a tailor from Saxony, joined Stephen F. Austin's colony in 1830 and is regarded as the first permanent German settler of Fayette County. He fought at San Jacinto with Company F of the First Regiment of Texas Volunteers and later served in Captain John York's ranging corps. In 1936 the state placed a marker over his grave near Ellinger, southeast of La Grange.
