History

This hilltop cemetery is essentially all that remains of Rutersville College, chartered in 1840 as the first chartered Protestant college in the Republic of Texas and named for Methodist missionary Martin Ruter. The school stood about a mile east of Rutersville and operated until the mid-1850s before its buildings were eventually razed, leaving only the burial ground on the site. Among those interred is Chauncey Richardson, the college's first president, who died in 1852.
