History

The Moore Cemetery was established as part of the Moore Plantation after John H. Moore bought a quarter league of land from J. R. Phillips on July 13, 1838. Its best-known interment is John Henry Moore—the original grantee of the league of land on which La Grange stands—whose grave carries a 1936 Texas Centennial marker; the earliest recorded burial is that of John Henry Cook in 1867. A 1959 survey found a public cemetery of at least an acre with many broken stones and lost graves, including burials of enslaved people.
