History
Nassau Cemetery lies between Shelby and Round Top off FM 1457 and takes its name from the nearby Nassau plantation, the roughly 4,400-acre estate the German Adelsverein bought in 1843 and named for the Duke of Nassau, protector of the emigration society. Land for the community cemetery was donated by a Mr. Stanley, and the Nassau School once stood next to it. The roughly one-acre burial ground is dominated by German family names such as Rummel, Weber, Voelkel, and Weyand; its oldest recorded grave is that of Wilhelmine Rummel, who died in 1930.
