History

The Black Cowboy Museum opened in Rosenberg in 2017, founded by Larry Callies, a former cowboy, ranch hand, and country singer whose family roots on the coastal plains west of Houston reach back to slavery. He had begun collecting material for the museum some 25 years earlier. The small storefront space displays badges, boots, saddles, guns, and photographs documenting the often-overlooked contributions of Black cowboys, and a larger facility has been planned in nearby Kendleton.
