History

Fairfield Female College grew out of the Freestone County School Association, incorporated on February 13, 1858, to found a first-class institution for young women. Its first session opened in 1859 under Henry Lee Graves, offering preparatory and college coursework and enrolling more than 100 students; it stayed open through the Civil War, when refugee families swelled enrollment. The school closed in 1889, and the State of Texas placed a marker at the site in 1936.
