History

Built in 1838, the Michel B. Menard House is the oldest surviving house in Galveston. Its Greek Revival frame was prefabricated in Maine and shipped in parts to the island for a founder of the city, fur trader and land promoter Michel B. Menard, who organized the Galveston City Company that same year. The house, also called The Oaks, hosted Galveston's first Mardi Gras ball in 1853, and it is now operated as a museum after the Galveston Historical Foundation and National Trust acquired it in 1992. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
