History
ELISSA is an iron-hulled, three-masted barque built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland, that called at the port of Galveston in 1883 during her working cargo career. After decades of service she was found derelict in Piraeus, Greece, and the Galveston Historical Foundation acquired her in 1974 and returned her to Texas for a multi-year restoration. In 1978 she became one of the first vessels placed on the National Register of Historic Places, was later designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990, and in 2005 the Texas Legislature named her the official Tall Ship of Texas. She sails today as a museum ship at the Galveston Historic Seaport.
