History

Reedy Chapel is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Texas, tracing to 1848 when enslaved African Americans were given land at 20th and Broadway for a place of worship. It was among the Galveston sites associated with the public reading of General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, the event commemorated as Juneteenth. After an earlier building burned in the 1885 Galveston fire, the present brick church was built in 1886 and named for the congregation's second pastor, the Reverend Houston Reedy. It is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
