History
St. Joseph's is the oldest German Catholic church in Texas and the oldest wooden church building in Galveston, built in 1859-1860 for the city's large German-speaking Catholic community at the urging of Bishop John Odin. German-born carpenter Joseph Bleicke constructed the simple Gothic Revival frame church, which was dedicated in April 1860 to St. Joseph, patron saint of laborers. Repaired after the 1900 Storm and closed by the Catholic Diocese in 1968, it was preserved by the Galveston Historical Foundation, which recovered much of its original furnishings. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
