History

This 13-room brick house in Texas City was built in 1912 for Col. Hugh B. Moore, a transportation executive who managed the Texas City Terminal Railroad and helped develop the port, and his wife Helen Edmunds Moore, who later served two terms in the Texas Legislature. Its walls are 14 inches thick and reinforced with steel railroad rails, enabling it to withstand both the 1915 hurricane and the 1947 Texas City disaster. The couple helped found the local library, named in their honor in 1929, and the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
