History
The Texas City Museum opened in March 1994 in the former J.C. Penney building, a 30,000-square-foot structure donated by the McDaniel family. Its exhibits document the city's founding and schools and include a Dahlgren cannon from the U.S.S. Westfield. The museum's most sobering displays cover the 1947 Texas City Disaster, when a fire aboard the SS Grandcamp ignited 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate; the resulting explosions killed an estimated 581 people, including all 27 members of the volunteer fire department, in the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history.
