History
The American Undersea Warfare Center, renamed the Galveston Naval Museum in 2018, is a naval museum at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island near Galveston. Its centerpiece is the USS Cavalla (SS-244), a Gato-class submarine commissioned in 1944 that sank the Japanese aircraft carrier Shokaku, earning a Presidential Unit Citation. Retired from the Navy and towed to Seawolf Park in 1971, the Cavalla is preserved alongside the destroyer escort USS Stewart by the Cavalla Historical Foundation.
