History

Captain William S. Fisher (died 1845), a Virginia native, commanded a company at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 and served as secretary of war of the Republic of Texas. In 1842 he led the ill-fated Mier Expedition into Mexico, where he was wounded and taken prisoner before his release in 1843. He died in Galveston, where the state placed his marker in 1936.
