History
John Melville Allen, born in Kentucky about 1798, fought in the Greek war of independence alongside Lord Byron before joining the Texas revolutionary army, where he served as acting major at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1839 he was elected the first mayor of Galveston and was re-elected annually until 1846. Allen died in 1847 and is buried in Galveston's Trinity Episcopal Cemetery, where the State of Texas placed his marker in 1936.
