History
Erected in 1966, this marker recounts the earliest recorded European contact with Galveston Island, beginning with the 1528 shipwreck of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and fellow survivors, who were held captive by the Karankawa Indians. It also notes later explorers of the Texas coast, including Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, and Luis de Moscoso.
