History
Erected in 1966, this marker sketches the founding of Galveston County's mainland communities, among them Dickinson (1824), Arcadia (1886), Alta Loma (1893), and Friendswood, settled by Quakers in 1895 who pioneered the county's fig industry. Others, such as Algoa and High Island, took their names from a British tanker wrecked in the 1900 storm and from a 47-foot salt-dome rise.
