History

Begun in 1859 by Texas pioneer George Washington Grover (1819-1901) and his wife Eliza, this two-story brick house at 1520 Market Street is one of Galveston's oldest and best-preserved antebellum residences, with 16-inch-thick walls and Federal and Greek Revival detailing. It survived the 1863 Battle of Galveston, the 1885 fire, and the hurricanes of 1900, 1943, and 2008, and was marked in 1976.
