History

Phillips Memorial Cemetery in Texas City traces its beginnings to the death of Kneeland Britton in the 1870s, when burials began on the Britton family land beside the Galveston, Houston & Henderson Railroad. Many founders of the nearby 1867 Settlement, a freedmen's community whose families drove cattle up the Chisholm Trail, are interred here. For decades it was the only African American cemetery on the Galveston County mainland.
