History

Contractor William H. Kishbaugh built this Victorian home in 1892 for Charles T. Rather (1855–1931), a leader in Gonzales's booming cotton industry, on part of the former grounds of Gonzales College. The design is a Victorian interpretation of the early Texas "dog-trot" house. After the Rather family moved to Austin in 1910 the property passed to farmer T. B. Fussell, and it was restored in the 1960s; it is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marked in 1975.
