History

Gonzales College was chartered by the Texas legislature on February 16, 1852, as a privately owned nondenominational school, opening its first session in April 1853 in a new two-story stone building. It was among the earliest colleges in Texas to award degrees to women, granting bachelor of arts degrees to female students by 1857, and enrollment peaked at 276 in 1859–60. The Civil War cut its terms short as professors and older students enlisted for Confederate service.
