History

Mount Eden Cemetery lies behind the Mt. Eden Missionary Baptist Church south of Waelder, in a historically African-American community once known as Hickston, which secured a post office in 1898. The church began under a brush arbor as an offshoot of St. James Baptist Church at Little New York, and its founding pastor, the Rev. Boyd James — a formerly enslaved man — is buried here. An 1883 fire destroyed the congregation's earliest records; when the Hickston post office closed, the community, church, and cemetery took the name Mt. Eden.
