History
Friendship Cemetery began in the 1830s with the burial of early "Yankee Town" settlers in what is now Sherman. A private owner closed it in 1859, but Madison Walsh and Nolan Stewart reopened it in 1861, and it was enlarged and improved in 1892 when an adjacent Methodist church was built. Its graves span the eras of the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the Union; the state marker was placed in 1967.
