History
Hagerman Cemetery is one of the few surviving remnants of the ghost town of Hagerman in northwestern Grayson County. Settlers arrived in the early 1870s at a community first called Steedman, whose post office opened in 1880; when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad reached it in 1909 the town was renamed Hagerman for railroad attorney James Hagerman. Residents began leaving in the 1920s once it became clear that Lake Texoma would flood the site, and though most of the town was submerged in 1944, the cemetery and a church remained above the water line.
