History

Georgetown Cemetery served the vanished Grayson County community of Georgetown, which grew up around Fort Johnston, established in 1840 near the Red River in the northern part of the county. The settlement was first associated with early landowner George Ivy and later took the name Georgetown in honor of George R. Reeves, who represented Grayson County in the state legislature from 1856 to 1858 and is buried in the county. The cemetery preserves the graves of families from this early frontier community.
