History

Halfway Cemetery in Hale County grew out of the Halfway community, established by settlers drawn to the area's grass, soil, and water in the early 1900s. A settler named Hooper provided land for a schoolhouse in 1908, and in 1917 he gave one acre for a burial ground that became Halfway Cemetery. Though the community's post office closed in 1914 and its school consolidated with Plainview in 1952, the cemetery endures alongside the surviving settlement.
