History

Murphree Cemetery sits about a mile north of Evant, on the Hamilton County side of the Coryell County line. Its first trustees — Joseph Hardy Dixon, W. R. Singleton, and Isaac W. Seale — purchased three acres from James Polk Murphree for one dollar in May 1899, and additional land was added in 1923 and 1950. The cemetery is maintained by an association of descendants of those buried there.
