History
The Dodge City-Tascosa Trail was a cattle and freight route established in 1877 that ran from Tascosa in the Texas Panhandle northeast to the markets of Dodge City, Kansas. Much of the road followed a path originally surveyed during the Civil War to supply Fort Bascom, New Mexico, and it later carried buffalo hunters, freight wagons, stagecoaches, and cattle herds across Hansford County. Use of the old trail faded around 1920 when the railroad reached the new town of Spearman, and a marker was erected in 1963.
