Space Center Houston opened on October 16, 1992, as the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, replacing the former visitor center in JSC Building 2. It is not owned by NASA and receives no federal funds; it is the cornerstone project of the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation. Its 250,000-square-foot complex displays more than 400 space artifacts, including flown Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo capsules and a Saturn V rocket, and it became a Smithsonian Affiliate in 2014.
