University of Houston–Clear Lake is a public college or university in Houston, Harris County. It is one of 22 degree-granting colleges and universities TexasRoam maps in Harris County.

UHCL owes its existence to the space program: after NASA placed its Manned Spacecraft Center near Clear Lake in 1961, engineers and contractors there wanted graduate courses close to work, and the University of Houston began teaching classes on the NASA site in 1964. Humble Oil's Friendswood Development Company donated land in the new Clear Lake City development, and in 1971 the Legislature created the University of Houston at Clear Lake City as a separate upper-level and graduate institution. Classes opened in September 1974 with 1,069 students and 60 faculty under founding chancellor Alfred R. Neumann, as the Bayou Building rose on the wooded campus. The school became part of the new University of Houston System in 1977 and adopted the name University of Houston–Clear Lake in 1983. It added a Pearland campus in 2010, admitted its first freshmen and sophomores in fall 2014 after decades as an upper-division school, and today offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs to students across the Bay Area.
