History
The African American Library at the Gregory School is Houston's first library dedicated to African American history and culture, located in a 1926 former elementary school in Freedmen's Town, the Fourth Ward's oldest Black community. The school was named for Edgar M. Gregory, a Union officer and Freedmen's Bureau official; it first opened in 1872 as the first school for freed people in Houston. The building was restored and reopened as the library on November 14, 2009, and was renamed the African American History Research Center in 2022.
