History

St. James United Methodist Church traces to 1867, when a group of African Americans left Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church to worship closer to Freedmen's Town, meeting under a brush arbor on Buffalo Bayou. The congregation built a sanctuary in 1871, was named West Point A.M.E. and then, by 1880, St. James Methodist Episcopal Church, and in 1910 relocated after a red-light district was drawn around its site. A new sanctuary rose in 1957, and the church took its present name after the 1968 Methodist merger; the marker was erected in 2009.
