History

Charlotte Marie Baldwin Allen (1805-1895), often called the Mother of Houston, came to Texas in 1834 with her husband Augustus Chapman Allen and his brother John Kirby Allen, whose purchase of land on Buffalo Bayou in 1836 launched the city of Houston. After John Kirby Allen's death in 1838 she became an active partner in the family's extensive business affairs, managing real estate, cattle, and development ventures. A noted philanthropist, she donated land, including Old Market Square, to the city and to civic and religious groups; a Texas historical marker was placed in her honor at Glenwood Cemetery in 2009.
