History

William Gammell, born in Scotland in 1812, fought in the Texas Revolution at the Battle of San Jacinto in Captain A. H. Wyly's company and later lived in Houston, where he died in 1869. The State of Texas erected a marker in his memory at Founders Memorial Cemetery in 1936, although he was buried elsewhere and later reinterred in what is now Washington Cemetery, leaving the Founders Memorial marker as a cenotaph.
