History

Trinity East United Methodist Church grew from Trinity Methodist, the oldest Black Methodist congregation in Houston, as members moved into the Third Ward in the early 1900s. A Sunday school organized in 1908 in Cook's Hall on Holman Street led to a church the next year under the Rev. Sidney Johnson, first called the Dowling Street Mission but widely known as Little Trinity. The 1915 hurricane destroyed its building, and the congregation, long active in aiding the needy, elderly, and homeless, hosted the 1969 conference at which historically Black Methodist churches voted to merge; the marker dates to 2009.
