History

St. John Missionary Baptist Church was organized in Houston in 1899 by the Reverends Gilbert Green and Hilliard R. Johnson, first meeting near Calhoun Avenue and Live Oak Street. After early buildings were lost to storms, the congregation built a lasting sanctuary in the early 1900s, and in 1946 Black contractor James M. Thomas erected the three-story Gothic Revival masonry church with twin towers that exemplifies early-to-mid-twentieth-century African American church architecture in the city. The Texas Historical Commission marked the church in 2011.
