History

The Rev. John Henry Jack Yates (1828-1897) was born enslaved in Gloucester County, Virginia, and moved to Houston's Freedmen's Town after the Civil War, working as a drayman while preaching. Ordained a Baptist minister in 1868, he became the first pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and helped build the Freedmen's Town community with homes, businesses, schools, and churches. He also helped organize the effort that purchased the land for Emancipation Park, one of the oldest parks in Texas.
