History
Completed in 1950 at the corner of Lazy Lane and Kirby Drive in Houston's River Oaks, the Hugo V. Neuhaus, Jr. House was designed by the Houston architect for his own family and is regarded as the first fully realized example of Miesian modern architecture in Texas. Neuhaus, a Yale and Harvard-trained architect, had served as Philip Johnson's local associate on the de Menil House and absorbed the influence of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which shaped this one-story steel, brick, and glass design with its flat roof and glazed walls overlooking two wooded acres. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a City of Houston Landmark.
