History

The old La Coma Ranch headquarters in northern Hidalgo County was built in the early 1900s by William Frederick Sprague, who at his peak controlled more than 200,000 acres of South Texas ranch land. The headquarters was a small community in itself, with employee families and a school for their children. The ranch later passed to the Bentsen family, and a state marker commemorates the historic headquarters.
