History

Cumby Cemetery lies just outside Cumby, a western Hopkins County town first known as Black Jack Grove after the grove of blackjack oaks used as a camping ground by Texas Rangers and earlier travelers. White settlement began in 1849, and the community was renamed in 1896 for legislator and Confederate veteran Robert H. Cumby. The oldest corner of the present cemetery holds the grave of a Ranger who fell ill and died while camped in the grove.
