History

Stewart Cemetery, near Sulphur Springs at the junction of FM 2653 and County Road 4738, began on land owned by early settler Zacharias Birdwell (1801-1880) and was first known as Birdwell's Graveyard. The site was in use by about 1870, with the earliest marked grave, that of infant James Becton Herman, dated 1879. In 1882 Birdwell's widow Polly deeded the ground to her nephew W. A. Stewart, giving the cemetery its present name; it was last used in 1915 and received a Texas historical marker in 1983.
