History
The Hopewell Community in Houston County began as a freedmen's settlement in the 1870s and at its height included farms, homes, businesses, a church, and a school. The community's Gudeblye School stood on land once owned by a teacher named Good Blye, and educator Franklin Columbus 'Peter' Fleeks donated family land in 1906 and 1916 for a county training school; it was later folded into the Crockett school system. A Texas Historical Commission marker was erected in 1990.
