History
Rancher Will R. Settles and his wife Lillian built this 15-story hotel in Big Spring after oil was discovered on their ranch, opening it on October 1, 1930 at a cost of about $500,000; designed by Abilene architect David Castle, it was long the tallest building between Fort Worth and El Paso. The hotel operated until the early 1980s, sat abandoned for roughly 30 years, and reopened after a major restoration in 2012. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
