History
East Mount Cemetery is one of Greenville's oldest burial grounds, on Marshall Street, with marked graves reaching back to 1850; historian W. Walworth Harrison identified the earliest as that of Mary Shaw, who died in childbirth in April 1850, and some burials may date to the 1840s. The site had earlier held Greenville's first schoolhouse and served as both school and cemetery before the Civil War. Many of the city's early settlers are buried here, including War of 1812 veteran James H. Gee, and the city maintains East Mount and neighboring Forest Park as some 51 acres of public cemetery.
