History
Mt. Carmel Cemetery near Wolfe City began in 1852 when William J. "Uncle Billy" Williams set aside land to bury his two-year-old niece, Angelina Williams; his parents George and Elizabeth Williams hold the oldest gravestones. First known as Williams Cemetery, it was renamed Mt. Carmel after a Methodist church of that name was built nearby in 1883. Maintained by the Mt. Carmel Cemetery Association and now covering more than 37 acres with some 10,000 graves, it received a Texas Historical Commission marker in 1975.
