History

Huff Creek Chapel Cemetery is the burial ground of the Huff Creek community, an African American 'freedom colony' founded in the Reconstruction era in western Jasper County. The nearby Huff Creek Chapel, once used as a school, is the last standing anchor of that settlement. The little-known community drew national attention in 1998, when the murder of James Byrd Jr. took place on its main road.
