History

Fort Davis National Historic Site preserves one of the best-surviving examples of a frontier military post in the American Southwest, established in 1854 to protect travelers and mail along the San Antonio-El Paso Road. From 1867 to 1885 it served as regimental headquarters for the Buffalo Soldiers, the all-Black 9th and 10th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantry regiments, who guarded West Texas and campaigned against the Apache leader Victorio in 1879-1880. The site was established in 1961 and today interprets the fort's restored buildings and its central role in the history of African Americans in the frontier army.
